 HERITAGE NO : 562 Bob Montford by Alex Service A typical front-rower of the old school, Bob began his career with Leigh St. Josephs and from 1932-1949 played over 200 games for his home town club, Leigh. He scored 4 tries and also kicked 8 goals for good measure. The Leigh club disbanded as a result of the Second World War and this is the main reason why Bob became a Saint, albeit on an impermanent basis. He made his debut at Dewsbury on 12th December 1942, against Eddie Waring's All Star team. The Yorkshiremen won 19-7. The front row was Porky Davies, Frank Phillips and Bob Montford. Bob made 19 appearances for the Knowsley Road outfit, his last at Huddersfield on 4th March 1944. The names in the front row were the same as for his debut. Saints lost the match 6-19. He worked as a Collier and in 1939 he was living in Briggs Street, Leigh. He died in his hometown in September 1975, aged 64. |
