Biography of Chris Morley

HERITAGE NO : 1048
Dave Parkinson writes: The elder of two rugby playing brothers who entered the professional game, Chris was snapped up by St Helens in December 1991 and made his debut during the 1993-94 season. He scored the first try of his top grade career in April 1994 as the Saints went down 16-18 to Bradford. After making four appearances in his first season, and 6 the following year, the Centenary season finally saw Morley make his mark on the Saints top grade team. He played in 12 of their 25 games, scoring a try in a 32-22 defeat of Oldham.

His performances were starting to make people sit up and take notice and it was during the first summer season that international selection beckoned for Chris, at a time when brother Adrian was forcing his way to the first team at Leeds.

Morley's Welsh debut came from the bench in 34-14 success over France in Carcassonne. Star of the show was 19 year old Iestyn Harris who nabbed a hat-trick and kicked 5 goals. Three weeks later Morley made his first start in the Principality, scoring the opening try after 10 minutes. Against the odds, Wales clung to a slender lead. Then, just before halftime England scored and eventually won through 26-12.

He helped the Saints lift the Super League trophy and was then part of the team that won through to a Premiership Final showdown with arch-rivals Wigan. Unfortunately for Morley, Wigan were far too good that day, running out convincing winners, 44-14.

1997 saw Morley enjoy his best season for St Helens. He was substitute in the Challenge Cup Final as Saints again overcame Bradford in a replay of the 1996 classic and scored crucial tries that helped his side win against Oldham, Paris and Castleford in a dramatic Premiership semi-final at Knowsley Road. Once again all that lay between St Helens and Premiership glory was Wigan. Again Wigan proved too good on the big occasion and Saints season ended in disappointment days later with a 12-66 implosion at Brisbane in a World Club Championship Quarter-Final.

That close-season brought about one of the biggest transfers in Rugby League history when Paul Sculthorpe moved from Warrington to St Helens. Morley was included as a make-weight in the deal which brought his Saints career to a close after 78 appearances.
