 HERITAGE NO : 817 Jim Mustard by SHS Local-born Jim Mustard was a hard-running second-rower who played 11 times for the Saints, mostly in the 1963-64 season. Competition at Knowsley Road was quite fierce in the forwards and Jim was later transferred to Liverpool City. He then re-surfaced playing for Pilkington Recs in the early 1970s, including a memorable Challenge Cup tie at Bramley, which the Recs lost narrowly. Former Recs team-mates in particular always speak very highly of him. Scrum-half Billy Simmons remembers that he would put an up and under up and chase after it shouting "Catch the pigeon!" Former front rower Eric Frodsham was also a good friend and like so many was upset to see him tragically pass away at an early age after illness. It is believed that Jim started out at the Recs, although any further information would be appreciated in this respect. He was clearly a popular player, who gained the respect of his team-mates. Jim died in St Helens in June 1974, aged 31. We were absolutely delighted to receive the Mustard Family at our Heritage Day in August 2019 when they were presented with Jim's Heritage Certificate, see gallery. | ||||
