Biography of Lewis Reece

HERITAGE NO : 703
The following obituary of Lewis was written by Alex Service

Farewell Lewis Reece
It is sad to report the passing of Lewis Reece on Sunday 23rd March. Former stand-off Lewis, who was a resident at Brown Edge House was the second oldest Saints’ player, aged 94. Winger Bill Adair is the oldest, at 95. When Lewis was born, on 12th November 1931, Saints were half-way through a season which would culminate in their first-ever League Championship success.

The former Cowley pupil played just one competitive game for the club, against Rochdale Hornets, at Knowsley Road, on 3rd November 1951. Lewis was at 6 with local lad ‘Todder’ Dickinson at scrum-half. This gave him the Heritage Number #703. It was a low-scoring game which frustrated the 8,000 crowd with Hornets 2-0 up at half-time. Saints won in the closing minutes when both half-backs conjured up a move to send second-rower George Parsons under the sticks for a converted try and an unlikely 5-2 victory.

The Saints’ team for that encounter read as follows: Jimmy Lowe; Mick Lawrence, Duggie Greenall [Capt], Stan McCormick, Lewis Reece, John Dickinson, Alan Prescott, Owen Moore, Bill Bretherton, George Parsons, Bill Whittaker and Max Garbler.

Lewis continued in the A team, before joining new boys Blackpool Borough, where he played for several years. He married Ann in 1958 and lived in Rainford for most of his life. He taught Physical Education at Robins Lane School in Sutton for a spell and was in the news with his team when they won the local Marsden Cup in 1959-60, followed by success in the prestigious Evening Chronicle Shield, beating Ambrose Bralow School at Swinton’s Station Road ground.

Lewis always took an interest in Saints’ affairs and, according to his grandson, Charlie Coppola, “was a life-long Saints’ fan right to the end.”
