Paul Round was a local lad who developed a reputation and a strong fast. He was superb running on to a short pass and had superb vision and anticipation in selecting and running through gaps in any defence. Paul was particularly effective in utilising his speed when defences were getting tired. Some sterling displays in the St Helens Colts team encouraged the Saints to sign him up on professional forms. In his first season, 1982/3, he made two substitute appearances against Castleford and in the last match of the season in the first Round of the Premiership against Widnes.

His first try for the Club came in the away 20 points to 12 loss to Leigh on the 13th. of November, 1983. During this second season in the first team he captured a regular place in the second row and scored four further tries in 32 appearances. During the campaign his confidence grew tremendously as a young rampant Saints side was put together by coach Billy Benyon.

In the `Meninga season` of 1984/5 Paul really got into the groove running in 16 tries, many from the exquisite passing of Pinner, Arkwright and Holding. He started the campaign with a bang, powering in for a hat trick against Runcorn in the first round of the Lancashire Cup. In the Final of the same competition Paul was instrumental in setting up for the Saints` second try that day. An astute Pinner pass sent Andy Platt throughout the Wigan defence and Paul Round following up almost scored as he was halted a couple of yards from the Wigan tryline. From the resultant play the ball an eagle-eyed Mal Meninga fed Roy Haggerty who plunged over for a great pressure try. It was Saints` day as the boys from Knowsley Road defeated the Riversiders on their own patch. Paul also scored two braces of tries, in a career best season tally of 16, as the Saints reached the Premiership Final and challenged for all honours in a campaign of champagne rugby. Paul was unlucky not to feature in the Premiership Trophy against Hull KR at Elland Road. Andy Platt was firing on all cylinders with Roy Haggerty, Paul Forber and Round competing for a couple of second row positions.

In the 1985/86 season Paul and the Saints finished the campaign in style with thirteen successive victories in the league to leave themselves a tantalising 2 points behind Champions Halifax. In the last three league games, Paul scored 8 tries in one week with braces against Salford and Oldham sandwiching a hat trick against Castleford.

In his last season at Knowsley Road Paul found the same stiff competition for a starting second row spot and was named substitute on 14 occasions out of 29 appearances. His eight tries that campaign included a brace against Bradford Northern in the first Round of the Premiership Trophy. The following week Paul was named substitute for the dramatic 1987 Challenge Cup Final against Halifax. In a sparkling Saints` second half recovery Paul scored a great try as he "rounded" the opposition to put the Saints in contention but all was in vain as the Saints lost by the odd point in 37!

When coach Alex Murphy returned from holiday in the summer of 1987 he discovered that Paul had been sold to Oldham - a move that did not impress the mercurial maestro. At that point Paul was still only 23 and `Murph` thought he still had his best years in front of him. Paul had a very impressive try to match ratio with 42 tries from 89 starts and 32 substitute appearances.
