Biography of Arthur Ryan |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 187 Arthur Ryan had been a regular in the A team. The bottle works blower lived in Boundary Road in 1911. Arthur died in the town in June 1923 at the premature age of 35. Details of Arthurs early rugby career are somewhat sketchy, but suffice to say, he played twice for the Saints First Team. The first occasion was against Keighley on 20th November 1906, when the Saints lost 5-15. Arthur was scrum-half that day and his stand-off was Teddy Toole. Match two for Arthur was somewhat less memorable, as Saints were trounced 6-78 by a rampant Warrington team at Wilderspool. It remains the clubs highest-ever loss. Arthur was on the left wing that day and the irony is that he was born in Warrington and one of seven children. The 1901 Census gives us further information. Arthurs father, Peter was a wire drawer, originally from the Aston district of Birmingham. His mother was from Warrington. Arthur lived quite close to the Knowsley Road ground in Dunriding Lane and was a bottlemaker at one stage. If anyone has any further information about Arthur, especially an image, we would like to hear from you. |
