HERITAGE NO : 551 Eric Sherratt by Alex Service The St. Helens Reporter gives us some clues as to the origins of this player in what was a very hard time for the St. Helens club in terms of obtaining playing personnel: "Sherratt an ex-Widnes forward was drafted in. He was far from fit after a long absence from the game. He began as a second row man and soon seemed to conk out." He partnered Les Garner in the back row. In his second and final match for the first team Eric played stand off against Wigan. Reports described him as a wily old character with a good rugby brain. Steve Fox, the Widnes historian, advised that Eric Sherratt was born in December 1912 and played in the second row for Widnes from 1933 to 1939. At Naughton Park Eric played 94 matches for the Chemics, scoring 10 tries in the process. He was an Insurance Broker lived in Bower Street, Widnes. Eric died in Sheffield in January 2004, aged 91. His great niece, Lisa Hammond, adds that Eric was in the RAF as a PT instructor. After the war he worked at Firbeck Hall in South Yorkshire. |
