Biography of Nat Silcock

Nat Silcock was a stalwart for the club playing over 100 matches mostly as a prop. He made his debut against Wakefield Trinity on the 22nd. February 1955. In 138 matches for the Saints Nat scored 29 tries for a total points aggregate of 87 points.

Nat was born in Widnes but he was signed from Wigan early in 1955. The 6ft 1in, 16stones prop had graduated from the second row but still retained a great burst of speed. Nat had toured Australia with Great Britain in 1954 and added great experience to Jim Sullivan`s squad. Indeed, he was so fast he once played on the wing marking the redoubtable Lionel Cooper in a Championship Final for Wigan against Huddersfield.

This hardworking, tough forward was a member of the 1956 Challenge Cup winning team that defeated Halifax by 13 points to 2. He was also in the side that wiped the floor with the Australian tourists by 44 points to 2 in that never to be forgotten encounter in 1956.

His final match for the Club was against Rochdale Hornets on the 30th of August, 1958. Nat was subsequently sold to Warrington.

In 1939 Nat was living in Hutchinson Street, Widnes and still attending school. He died in Warrington in July 1992, aged 64.
