Biography of Jack Simpson

HERITAGE NO : 52
Jack Simpson by Alex Service

The St. Helens Newspaper for 26th August 1899 gave a detailed account of transfer movements connected with the club, including the following: 'It is stated that Rochdale Hornets have secured the services of J. Simpson, the well-known county forward who had been playing for St. Helens for the past two seasons and was one of their best and most consistent players. Simpson is an old member of the Hornets team but though working for a Rochdale firm at New Brighton Tower preferred to play for a club near his work and home. Simpson has now returned to Rochdale and has placed his services at the disposal of his old club. Simpson is a Kendal man, but went to Rochdale quite ten years ago. Being a man of splendid physique, he soon caught the eyes of the county authorities and for three or four seasons before the formation of the Northern Union he played regularly with Lancashire county. He has also played with the Northern Union. He was captain of the Hornets team one season, but through some misunderstanding he transferred his services to the now defunct Rochdale St. Clements club. Simpson is undoubtedly a good man and especially at this juncture he will be welcomed back to Rochdale while he will be missed by St. Helens.'

Simpson made his debut for Saints during a 0-8 defeat at Salford on 2nd September 1897. Presumably the demise of the Rochdale St. Clements club was a factor in him coming to Knowsley Road. He was a consistent performer and played in 21 matches during his first season. Simpson backed this up with a further 24 in 1898-99, his last being once again at the Willows, Salford, on 1st April, when the Reds duly ended Saints Challenge Cup aspirations in the third round.

John played no less than ten times for Lancashire under the old Rugby Union and this is quite an accolade indeed. To represent both Lancashire and Yorkshire at the time was virtually the equivalent of getting capped by England.

The 1901 Census had Jack living in Dorset Street, Rochdale. However, records show that John emigrated to Canada later in that decade. The 1911 Canadian Census has John working a farm near Wynyard, Saskatchewan, Canada. He died in the same area in 1940 at the age of 71. Quite a life journey.
