 HERITAGE NO : 330 Eric Stout by Alex Service Eric signed for the Saints on two occasions [22-08-23 and 01-10-24] and was a local lad, in the 1920s resided at Brook Street, St Helens. A resolute full-back, he made his First Team debut against Swinton on 13th November 1924. Although the Saints lost 6-20, Eric was able to hold his place in the team for the next 9 matches. Overall he played in 16 matches, the last being against Warrington on 18th April 1925, when the Saints won 15-8 at Wilderspool. In 1939 Eric was living in Chamberlain Street, St Helens and working as a bricklayer. He passed away in October 1999, aged 95. His grandson, Dave Denning, has kindly provided us with further information about his career. Perhaps as far as I know my Grandads father had a fall out with the Saints board and took him away to Broughton Rangers. He played there for a short time before his father again had a fall out with the board and he finished playing unfortunately. I always remember him telling me of his debut and him knocking the ball on early in the game. He blamed his wife for standing right near to him on the terraces and shouting for him just before he tried to take the ball. I am sure she had nothing to do with it really. Anyway his career was much shorter than he would have liked and he never really forgave his father for taking him away from Saints. Very sad as he had great prospects apparently. Anyway my Grandad carried on in the building trade until he retired. He lived in Chamberlain Street until his mid-eighties before entering sheltered accommodation and then Eccleston Court until his passing. Thanks to Dave for this extra information. |
