Biography of Richard Taylor

HERITAGE NO : 54
Richard Taylor by SHS

Richard Taylor, also known as Dick Taylor, was a miner who lived in Devon Street, Newtown, who worked at the Alexandra Colliery in Crossley Road, Thatto Heath. According to his grandson, Brian, he was universally known as ‘Plunger’ Taylor, because he always went in head first. He picked up a knee injury from his playing days, compounded by years down the pit. Yet it did not prevent his regular attendance of an evening at his local, the Nags Head at the bottom of Knowsley Road in his later years.

‘My grandfather was not a small man as such, probably built in the manner of a loose forward and it seems as though he had a fair turn of speed and could play in both the forwards and the backs’ adds Brian. ‘My dad, Richard (Dick) Taylor, was secretary of the Saints supporters club for many years and my mother Kitty ran the refreshment stalls on the ground and I was a regular in the Boys Pen from about 1945. I saw my uncle, Bill Rankin, the front rower, play at Knowsley Road. He had come to the Saints after the war and previously played for the St Helens Recs. Our family have had a long association with the Saints and my dad picked up Tom Van Vollenhoven from the station when he joined the club. Happy memories. I also played for St Helens Rugby Union club at Moss Lane.’ Richard died in 1956 aged 83.
