Biography of Fred Terry

HERITAGE NO : 762
Frederick Terry by Dave Dooley

Fred Terry was born in St Helens and spent his boyhood in Elliot Street. He was a hardworking forward for the club playing 30 matches mostly as a loose forward or second row forward. Fred was signed from the St Helens Juniors team and made his debut against Dewsbury at Knowsley Road on the 7th. March 1959 when the Saints won by 22 points to two. In 30 matches for the Saints Fred scored 3 tries, kicked no goals for a total points aggregate of 9 points.

He scored his first try for the Saints in only his second match in a home game against Salford on March 14th.1959. His second try was against Halifax on April 4th. the following month at Thrum Hall when Fred scored a vital try in the 25 points to 19 victory over the tough Yorkshiremen. In the Championship winning team of season 1958/59 Fred Terry played 5 matches, playing prop on one occasion and four times in the second row, scoring two tries. The following season saw plenty of first team action for Fred with a total of 20 games under his belt. In eleven of these matches Fred played at loose forward; he also played 8 times in the second row and once as prop. In the home match against Rochdale on 19th, December, 1959 Fred scored his third and final try for the club in a 26 points to two victory.

In Fred`s last season with the club (1960/61) the Triplex Worker played five matches all at loose forward without crossing the tryline. On the family front, out of Fred`s 30 matches for the Saints he played with his brother 25 times. On the two occasions that Fred played in the number 10 jersey, the open side prop was his brother Abe. Unfortunately this was not a winning combination with Saints going down to Featherstone Rovers in a third round Challenge Cup match by 20 points to six on March 21st 1959 and subsequently dropping two league points to Leeds by 24 points to 11 on 28th. November 1959.

His final match for the Club was against Hull KR on the 22nd. of April, 1961. Fred was subsequently transferred to Blackpool Borough. Personal footnote:By the way, in my primary school class, St Theresa`s (Devon Street) was Vincent Terry, Abe and Fred`s younger brother. I remember Abe bringing the Challenge Cup to our class (Junior 4 teacher Gus White) in 1961 - what a great day that was! Later I met up with Vincent some six years later when he was working as a fitter at Ravenhead Glass (UG), by then Vincent had reached quite a height!

Fred Terry Obituary by Denis Whittle

Saints 14th man dies
Countless friends in Rugby League have been saddened by the death of a versatile forward who was often 14th man in Saints' Championship line-up more than a generation ago.

Thatto Heath-based Fred Terry collapsed after enjoying a drink at the Springfield Hotel and was dead on arrival at Whiston Hospital. He leaves his widow Marion, daughter Diane, her husband Alan and grandchildren, brothers Albert, John and Vincent, and sisters Josie and Sheila.

Popularly known as Ab, Albert was a Great Britain tourist who made 215 appearances for Saints, and played alongside Fred in the Knowsley Road team on several occasions.

Raised in Elliot Street, 6ft 14 stone Fred first sampled Rugby League at St. Teresa's School before joining the Blackbrook amateur club, and turned professional with Saints in 1958.

Although his first team chances were limited to 30 games due to the presence of internationals Dick Huddart, Brian Briggs and Vince Karalius Fred remained philosophical about his ongoing fringe role in saying: "I didn't mind as long as I was in Saints' squad."

His two big moments came when deputising for loose-forward Karalius first in the Lancashire Cup Final versus Warrington at Wigan in 1959, when Saints lost 5-4 due to a controversial try by Brian Bevan. Then in 1959 Fred wore the number 13 shirt again when Hull were beaten 26-9 in the Challenge Cup semi-final at Bradford.

Fred left Saints for Blackpool Borough before hanging up his boots. In a tribute to Fred one-time team-mate Frankie Barrow said: "Whether at prop, second row or loose-forward he never gave anything less than 100 per cent throughout the full 80 minutes."

St.Austins Church, Thatto Heath, was packed with Rugby League personalities when the funeral service was held prior to cremation. Fred died in June 2006, aged 68.
