Biography of Jim Thornburrow *

Yet another case of a player co-opted by the Saints to make up a team during the war years, Jim Thornburrow, a pacy threequarter, was born in Barrow and made 122 appearances for his hometown club between 1934 and 1944. He scored 50 tries and kicked 4 goals for the Shipbuilders too. Jim played on the left wing during the 1937-38 campaign, which saw Barrow get to Wembley for the first time, although they lost to a powerful Salford side. The war years saw Jim as a guest player for Bradford Northern and Keighley. During the war years, he also guested for Bradford Northern and Keighley, as well as the Saints and was loaned out to Castleford in 1946. In 1939 Jim was working as a joiner in the shipbuilding industry and was living in Paxton Street, Barrow. Jim passed away in Barrow in September 1965, aged 50.
