Robert Thorpe by Alex Service
The Rugby League Registers reveal that Robert lived in Manchester, at Denton. According to the St. Helens Newspaper for 28th June 1929: 'The St. Helens Rugby Club have signed on another thirteen stone forward named Thorp (sic) of the Chester College Fifteen. Thorpe is six feet thirteen stones and twenty years of age. He has just completed his period of training for the position of teacher and has been a regular and outstanding member of the College pack. He will teach in the Manchester area and has been invited to join two very well known Rugby League Clubs. Parker, the Chester College player already on the St. Helens register, induced him to sign for the Saints."
Thorpe made his debut at Oldham, in the first week of January 1930, a match in which the visitors lost 4-20. Robert did receive plaudits from the match report, however, as 'a tireless worker in the front row.' It is believed that he played most of his rugby in the A Team and his final match was a one point victory at Leigh on 14th March 1931, when two tries from Alf Ellaby helped the Saints to a 20-19 success. According to the Registers, Robert signed on for three seasons at Knowsley Road and played seven times for the First Team. We do not know about his rugby career after Saints. Outside rugby the teacher moved around Lancashire, doubtless following his chosen career. In 1939 he was living in Beach Road, Thornton Cleveleys. He died in February 1985, aged 76.
