Ron was born in Malvern Road, Parr and was 6 feet and 13 stones in his playing days. He played 12 matches for the Saints and scored 3 tries. He signed from North and South Eccleston Labour Club after demobilization from the Navy in 1946.

He later played for Swinton and Salford. A fairground fighter, he once claimed a famous victory against fellow rugby league player Jonty Pilkington in a three-round challenge bout.

Ron died at the age of 46 in St Helens in December 1970. He was married to Edith and has a daughter, Barbara. His brother Lawrence was Mayor of St. Helens in 1990-91. His nephew and namesake is Chairman of Blackbrook ARLFC.
