Biography of Tom Winstanley



HERITAGE NO : 16
Tom was a very hard forward who played for the Saints from the birth of the Northern Union in 1895 to 1901. He was often at the heart of the forward drives which dominated play at the time. Before the Northern Union commenced Tom played 46 matches for the Club. During the Northern Union period played 127 times for the club and scored four tries against Tyldesley, Stockport, Birkenhead and Rochdale Hornets. Born in Thatto Heath, Tom played with his brother William for the Saints in the first ever Challenge Cup Final against Batley. The Saints lost that match by 10 points to 3 despite the efforts of forwards like Tom. The 1901 Census has Tom employed as a bottle maker and living in Crossley Road, Thatto Heath, St. Helens. Tom and William must have belonged to a close knit family for most of their family lived in the same road. Tom died in St Helens in April 1947 at the age of 76.
