Biography of William Winstanley



HERITAGE NO : 23
Bill was a very hard forward who played for the Saints from the birth of the Northern Union in 1895 to 1898. He was often at the heart of the forward drives which dominated play at the time. In all he played 65 times for the club and scored two tries in victories against Widnes and Leigh. Bill played for the Saints in the first ever Challenge Cup Final against Batley in 1897. Unfortunately the Saints lost that match by 10 points to 3.

Away from rugby Bill Lived much of his life in Crossley Road, Thatto Heath, St Helens and was employed as Glass Bottle Blower. William died on the 2nd of February, 1939 in St. Helens at the age of 70.Dave Dooley
