Biography of Gary Wheeler



HERITAGE NO : 1171
Gary was signed from Blackbrook ARL where he represented England at under 15s and 16s and toured with the winning Saints Academy side to Australia in 2006. A gifted footballer he was at home in any of the back positions. He scored a try, coming on as substitute, in the 56 points to nil demolition of London Skolars on his debut in April 2008. He later made his Super League debut in the comfortable away victory over Huddersfield Giants in August of the same year.

In 2009 Gary had much more game time in the first team and seemed comfortable with any role he was given. He particularly impressed in the home Cup win over Catalans Dragons on the 10th of May 2009, scoring a brace of tries and landing a conversion. One week later in Perpignan, with just two minutes left in the match, he plunged over in the corner against the same opposition to capture two points for the table topping Saints. In his first 12 games for the club he scored nine tries and kicked four goals clearly demonstrating his potential to be a top class prospect.

The 2010 season finished with an empty trophy cabinet at the Saints but the side creditably made it to the Challenge Cup Semi Final and a fifth successive Grand Final.

The 2011 season was a real roller coaster for all the team. Not only had the club got to contend with playing all their home matches at Widnes, following the sale of Knowsley Road, but a series of injuries threatened to derail the quest for silverware. Gary suffered more than most as his appearances were again limited due to injury. However, Gary recovered in time to feature in the the Grand Final run in, coming on as a substitute in the superb victory over Wigan and the agonising Grand Final loss to Leeds.

His next two seasons were dogged by injury and Gary was forced to sit out of the action for long spells. It was a most frustrating time for this player with undoubted skills and abilities.
