The 2009 season proved to be a roller coaster season for the Saints. The ride however, ultimately ended in disappointment as the Saints trophy cabinet was laid bare for the first time since the 2003 campaign. Some sparkling performances were punctuated with below par matches as the club shaped a new team for the future and youth was given its head.

Wigan-born Matty made his debut in the home league over Salford City Reds in March 2009. This started a creditable run of opportunities in the first team that saw Matty amass 20 appearances in a season that heralded his arrival on the first team scene. He scored his first try for the club in the 66 points to 6 demolition of Gateshead Thunder in the Challenge Cup sixth round.

The 2010 season finished with an empty trophy cabinet at the Saints but the side creditably made it to the Challenge Cup Semi Final and a fifth successive Grand Final. Matty turned in some excellent performances to maintain his presence in the Saints setup.

The 2011 season was a real roller coaster for all the team. Not only had the club got to contend with playing all their home matches at Widnes, following the sale of Knowsley Road, but a series of injuries threatened to derail the quest for silverware.

Nevertheless the players responded magnificently by reaching an eleventh consecutive Challenge Cup Semi-Final and a record breaking sixth successive Grand Final. However, a sour taste of disappointment featured as the Saints lost to Wigan in the Challenge Cup and Leeds came back strongly in the last twenty minutes of the Grand Final to dampen the spirits. The season was marked by the emergence of young players who cemented their positions in the first team and demanded their inclusion in the big games.

Matty ended his career at the Saints having scored 9 tries in 60 matches with years ahead of him in the sport. His strong running and hard graft in defence promised a sound future for his new club, the Salford City Reds. Sure enough, he went on to make 68 appearances for them, scoring 11 tries, before joining Wakefield Trinity Wildcats for the start of the 2015 campaign. An eminently reliable and consistent performer, Matty has had a rewarding career in Super League.
