Biography of Stuart Howarth |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 1207 Stuart Howarth by SHS One of the most likable lads to have donned the red vee over the years! Stuart was a member of the Wigan Warriors scholarship scheme from the age of 13 and always gained a reputation as a bit of a utility player, with stints at half-back, acting half-back and back row in what is a tremendously varied career. He began with Wigan amateurs St. Judes and his fellow graduates at Wigan warriors include the likes of Liam Farrell and Josh Charnley. Stuart helped to three second-string Grand final victories against the Saints and his last game for Wigan was, in effect, the last professional game at Knowsley Road, when the visitors won 22-30 However, he was soon on the move to Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, with a lad called Josh Veivers, a surname that is instantly recognisable to Saints supporters! Stuart then moved to Salford in 2012, playing in 29 matches, an ever-present in fact, before joining Saints as an interchange hooker in 2013, with stand-off Lee Gaskell moving in the other direction. Stuart provided a stable presence in the hooking role, covering for the injured James Roby and also playing the odd game at half-back during his 16 appearances. His debut was a daunting one, against Wigan at the DW Stadium on 29 March 2013, when the visitors lost 16-28. He was to play in the return league match against them on 30th April, however, when the Saints christened their new stadium with their first win against the Old Enemy by 22-16 at the new venue. Remember Joe Greenwoods clinching try? His last was against Warrington Wolves in the play-offs at Langtree on 30 August, a relatively disappointing end to a somewhat disrupted campaign. Stuart returned to Salford and then joined Hull for the 2015 season. He then returned to Wakefield for a spell and in 2018 he was at Whitehaven, with former Saints forward Carl Foster the coach. He also has played for Workington, Blackpool, Barrow and Doncaster at various times and can be described as a well-travelled rugby league footballer! |
