Biography of Vinty Matthews



HERITAGE NO : 610
Vinty learned his rugby trade at Holy Cross school. He was a strong loose forward who played first team football at the end of the Second World War. Vinty scored a try on his debut against Castleford in September 1944. After his playing days were over he became trainer of the Pilkington Recs team in the 1950s. His coaching duties also took home to the successful Vine Tavern Club for a spell. Vinty kept a close eye on the Saints from his dwelling in Knowsley Road and was a regular attendee at Past Players events. He died in St Helens in September 1996 aged 75.
