MATCH REPORT |

MATCH REPORT : It was a strong start from the Saints, taking only four minutes to get points on the board. It started from a great run from Beri Salihi who broke through Huddersfield defence. She then passed the ball to Luci McColm who then offloaded to Phoebe Hook, and it was Hook who claimed the first try of the game and she scored in the right corner. Faye Gaskin missed her conversion attempt, 4-0. Our defence was strong, within the first ten minutes played we were able to continually keep the Giants in their own 20m area. The Red V Women then knocked on within their own half to gift Huddersfield their first bit of goodball territory, but our team kept up their defence and were able to keep the Giants at bay. Dani McGifford grabbed the next try, as the Saints played the ball down the left side and it landed in the hands of McGifford who flew over the try line. Gaskin’s conversion attempt was unlucky, going wide, 8-0, with over 15 minutes played. The Saints Women provided a strong attacking set, with a great carry from Georgia Sutherland inching closer to the Giants line. Salihi had a brilliant run as she broke through the Giants defence showing the Red V Women’s determination to score in almost every set. 25 minutes into the match, the ball was played left, and it once again landed in the hands of McGifford who was able to dodge the Giants defence and glide over the try line to secure her second try of the game. Gaskin’s conversion attempt again went wide, making the score 12-0. We made our first interchange of the game at the half hour mark, Naomi Williams came off with Erin McDonald going on in her place. As the break edged closer, quick hands from McGifford to Woosey saw her break her way through Huddersfield line and ground the ball for a try. It was another unlucky conversion attempt from Gaskin, 16-0 as the final act of the opening half. The Saints women headed into the changing rooms with a comfortable 16-point lead at the break. Vicky Whitfield started in the second half with Sutherland coming off. It didn’t take her long to make an impact either! After a smart pass from Cunningham, Whitfield caught the ball and scored right under the sticks. Gaskin successfully kicked her conversion attempt right in front of the sticks, increasing the lead to 22-0 just three minutes after the break. Moments later Salihi did a fantastic run where she was able to outrun the Giants defence and score underneath the sticks to make it back-to-back scores. That saw the Red V resume control of the fixture, with Gaskin adding the conversion with ease, 28-0. The Saints Women were running hot after the break, a third quickfire score came on their their next attacking set. Playing the ball right, Channy Crowl got her hands on it and was able to power through Huddersfield line and ground the ball. Gaskin got her third successful conversion in a row, securing the extra two points, 34-0. The clock stopped with fifty-two minutes gone as Salihi went down in a tackle, she was then taken off the field for a Head Injury Interchange and sadly did not come back on for the remainder of the game – however she did pass her HIA and can remain available for next week’s home match against Barrow. Rebecca Rotheram went on in her place. The Saints Women also then made a double interchange which saw Sutherland returning to the pitch and Alyx Bridge going on, with Whitfield and Stott coming off. Hardman & Richard’s squad continued to show great defence, they kept the Giants back for most the match, but on the occasions they did go close tackles from the likes of Williams and Woosey made sure the visitors would be unable to break through the Saints line. Heading into the final ten minutes McGifford then struck again, securing herself a hat-trick! It was set up after a quick pass from Williams to Dani, who was then able to fly down the left side of the wing and score! Gaskin missed her conversion attempt, as the ball fell just in front of the cross bar, 38-0. Sutherland then claimed the next try for the Saint Women a few minutes later. The prop powered through the Giants defence and scored right next to the posts, Gaskin succeeded with her kick to make it 44-0. As the final hooter drew close, the Red V women were determined to grab one more score, and they did. Phoebe Hook grabbed the last try of the game, after the ball was played right allowing her to glide over the try line. Gaskin’s conversion attempt was unfortunate to bring the score up to fifty, making the final score 48-0. Thanks to the Saints Media Centre for their excellent coverage. |
