MATCH REPORT

MATCH REPORT : Saints confirmed their place in the top-two with a show of overwhelming power and skill that destroyed the unfortunate Castleford Tigers, only narrowly missing out on setting a new club record for a league victory.

Australian centre Jamie Lyon did manage to set Saints’ Super League individual points-scoring record with 32, but this was far from a one-man show.

From the opening minute when the Saints juggernaut steamed downfield with extravagant offloads and numerous runners in support, the Tigers were always struggling to keep up with Super League’s most devastating attacking force.

However the home side did have their moments in attack during the opening exchanges, but after last week’s scoreless performance against Wakefield they lack confidence going forward and even with 18 consecutive tackles couldn’t breach the Saints line.

Unflustered, Saints continued to throw the ball about but only a simple pass was needed from Sean Long to Jon Wilkin for the second-rower to cross for the game’s opening score.

After receiving a penalty on their own line after Manu’s tackle on Maurie Fa’asavalu, Saints kept the Tigers defence on the back foot, rolling downfield and ending with Willie Talau’s smart finish in the corner.

The Tigers had one last chance to get themselves back into the game, but Paul Wellens hauled down his opposite number Michael Platt and Wilkin and Lyon combined to keep out Manu on the next tackle. The chance was gone and moments later so was the game.

Francis Meli skipped out of Paul Handforth’s attempted tackle to put Wellens in unopposed. Little more than sixty seconds after Lyon’s conversion had sailed over the crossbar he was lining up his fourth attempt after Paul Sculthorpe had profited from Leon Pryce’s break.

Maurie Fa’asavalu charged over soon afterwards before Wellens made it 24 points in just 15 minutes with his second try of the afternoon.

Half-time brought only the briefest of respite for the Tigers and they concede soon after the restart. Saints moved the play right and Lyon’s delightful flick pass put Ade Gardner clear, who unselfishly returned the ball for the Australian centre to score.

The right-wing partnership repeated the trick immediately afterwards but were pulled back for a marginal forward pass.

Lyon intercepted Ryan McGoldrick’s pass near halfway as Saints reinforced their superiority then Cayless’s try three minutes later brought up the half-century.

James Roby added his name to the scoresheet before Sean Long added two tries in three minutes with trademark tumbles. Lyon maintained his perfect record with the boot with his twelfth conversion.

Former Saint Gray Viane scored the merest of consolations on 79 minutes to end 220 minutes without a try for the Tigers.
