Biography of Jamie Lyon

HERITAGE NO : 1148
Jamie Lyon by Alex Service

St.Helens Rugby League club took a huge gamble when they signed Australian Test centre Jamie Lyon on a two-year deal for the start of the 2005 season. Jamie stunned the NRL by quitting the Parramatta club in Sydney just one game into the 2004 campaign after spending seven years with the Eels. Apparently unsettled by life in Sydney, the 23 year old returned to his home in Wee Waa and actually helped his local team to Grand Final success in the NSW Group 4 competition.

The man who began his Parramatta career with five tries, together with a brace on his debut for Australia was tagged the new Mal Meninga by Saints' Coach Ian Millward, Lyon soon proved his worth to the team at Warrington's Halliwell Jones Stadium in the Fourth Round of the Super League competition on 4 March, when he was switched to stand-off half in the absence of Paul Sculthorpe. He engineered a stunning 18-16 victory by creating three tries in the last nine minutes. Apart from his beguiling handling skills, it was his kicking game that took centre stage that evening, with a brilliant 40-20 kick, followed by a spiralling bomb that was seized upon by Keiron Cunningham for the match-winning try with just a couple of seconds to go! Lyon's range of skills had to be seen to be believed, allied to deceptive strength and pace. His tackling technique was such that he could bring down players much bigger than himself, such as the Bradford Bulls giant winger Lesley Vainikolo. Jamie also developed an almost telepathic understanding with fellow Australian winger Darren Albert, the most explosive partnership in Super League in 2005. Most important of all, he settled down quickly into his new environment and clearly enjoyed his rugby once again!

Indeed, Lyon produced Man of the Match performances with regularity, scoring 24 tries in 31 appearances, as the Saints overtook Leeds to take possession of the League Leader's Shield in 2005. Despite their 'Great Entertainers' tag, Grand Final glory eluded them, as injuries to key players took their toll. Yet Jamie produced a stunning individual performance against Leeds Rhinos in the Elimination semi-final to bring the Saints right back into contention with two brilliant solo tries, together with two magnificent touchline conversions in the last ten minutes. Although the game was lost 19-16 and the team were later eliminated by Bradford Bulls, there was to be some consolation for Lyon when he was named Rugby League's Man of Steel, the third St.Helens player to receive this coveted award after Sean Long (2000) and Paul Sculthorpe (2001 and 2002). He was also named the Rugby League Writer's Player of the Year and Rugby Player of the Year in the BBC North West Sports Personality awards ' due recognition indeed for a virtually instant Saints' Great!

2006 was a fantastic year for Jamie and the Saints. It was the Year of the Treble, when the club enjoyed a Challenge Cup victory against Huddersfield at Twickenham, with Jamie scoring a marvellous try and kicked 7 goals. The Saints also won their second League Leaders Shield, losing just four matches during the campaign. Then it was on to Old Trafford and a comprehensive destruction of Hull FC in the Grand Final by 26-4. Jamie kicked 3 goals. Jamie returned to Australia and won a Grand Final with the Manly club, who later became World Club Champions after beating Leeds at Elland Road. He remained a hugely popular figure in the town and supporters hoped that he would return to wear the famous red vee for a second spell. What a signing he would be as a flagship player for the opening of our new stadium. But it was not to be. We still have some fantastic memories of his time in St Helens, though.
