MATCH REPORT

MATCH REPORT : Saints' 2025 campaign came to a close on Saturday evening, as the Red V were beaten 20-12 by Hull KR at Sewell Group Craven Park.

Hull KR had the first chance. Slick hands down their left edge saw Joe Burgess break down the wing, the ball went to ground but Tristan Sailor as unable to collect it, giving the hosts a full set ten metres from our line. Some strong Saints defence held the Robins up short of the line though on the last tackle, as they looked to again go down the left edge with Oliver Gildart. Saints lost Jon Bennison to a HIA within the opening ten minutes of the game, he didn’t return. Two minutes later, Saints were reduced to twelve men for ten minutes. Elliot Minchella found Jez Litten who broke downfield and kicked ahead, the referee ruled Jack Welsby had pulled him back and showed him a yellow card. They opted for two with the resulting penalty which Arthur Mourgue slotted over to give them a 2-0 lead. A few minutes later, the hosts also had the first try of the contest. Burgess again broke down the left wing and found Mikey Lewis in support with what looked like a forward pass, but the referee ruled it fair and awarded the four-pointer. Mourgue added the conversion, 8-0. 24 minutes in we had a trip to the video referee. The Robins again came down their left edge, Gildart found Burgess with an offload and he dove over in the corner from close range. The on-field verdict of try confirmed after as lengthy check. Mourgue was unable to add the conversion, 12-0 Saints trailed. They almost had another from the restart. Peta Hiku found an offload to Tyrone May and be broke downfield, he tried to find Mourgue but he was unable to collect the pass and Saints survived. With just over three minutes of the first half to go, we had another trip upstairs. Hiku broke through a gap down the right edge and tried to reach out for the line but fumbled the ball in the process. As we entered the final minute of the half, Lewis attempted a one-pointer from just inside the Saints half but it sailed wide. 12-0 the Red V trailed at the break in East Yorkshire.

Saints got back into it right at the start of the second half. Matt Whitley got an offload to Deon Cross on the last tackle, he broke down the wing, threw a dummy which fooled Mourgue and scored. Jonny Lomax’s conversion bounced in off the post, 12-6 we trailed. The visitors tried to find another. On the last tackle, Welsby floated a high kick to the left edge towards Harry Robertson who caught it, but was tackled short of the line. 14 minutes into the second half the hosts had the chance to make it a two-score game once again. Saints tackled Rhyse Martin but he stayed down and the referee said Shane Wright had caught him high and awarded the penalty. Martin stepped up to take it but it went wider 12-6 it remained. Saints forced an error but the hosts then were awarded another penalty. On the last tackle, deep in Saints territory, Lewis kicked high and the ball came loose. Saints did well to wrap up the tackle though and force the turnover. Just past the midway point of the second half, we had another trip to the video referee. Lewis’ high kick was fumbled by Cross, the Robins recovered the ball and Gildart dove over in the corner. After a check, the on-field verdict of try was agreed with. Martin’s conversion went wide, 16-6. With less than ten minutes to go, Gildart had his second try. The visitors moved the ball through the hands down their left edge, Lewis found Gildart and he cut inside span through a tackle and grounded the ball. Martin’s conversion hit the post, 20-6. From the restart, Hull KR had another. Saints went short, Burgess claimed it, landed and raced sixty metres to score. It went upstairs to the video referee and they judged a Saints player had been obstructed from that kick off, so the visitors had a penalty instead. Saints looked to have grabbed a consolation towards the end as a result of the penalty. Moses Mbye put Robertson through a gap, he rounded Jack Broadbent to score in the corner. It went to the video referee but there were no issues. Lomax added the extras, from the touchline, 20-12. The visitors tried some off the cuff plays to end the game but nothing turned into points, as Saints’ 2025 campaign ended with a 20-12 defeat to Hull KR at Sewell Group Craven Park.
