Mark Edmondson by Dave Dooley:

Mark was born on the third of November 1979 in Lancaster. The forward signed from Vale of Lune RU in 1997 and made his debut against Salford Reds on the 7th. of March 1999. Mark Scored his first points in his Saints career during the 2001 season on the ninth of March in the Challenge Cup tie against Huddersfield. His early performances for the Saints illustrated a thirst for hard work and a desire to do well in rugby league.

Edmondson scored 3 tries in 18 games in 2002 for the Saints which include a brace against Warrington in the away league victory. His performances that season were rewarded when he travelled to the South Pacific with the England A team.

Mark had a very impressive 2003 season and showed steady improvement. His hard work and dedication were rewarded with a 2 year contract extension and timely praise from coach Ian Millward. Mark performed with added strength and sound defence throughout the campaign and forced his way onto the Saints` team-sheet for most matches. His try against Batley Bulldogs in the fifth round of the Challenge Cup was well taken.

This popular player demonstrated a `marked` improvement in the 2004 campaign and forced his way into the starting line-up for many games. A superb try in the fourth round Challenge Cup at Odsal paved the way for a stunning run from Mark and the Saints in that competition. Mark was running in hard and tackling like a demon. His ultimate reward was a Challenge Cup winners medal as Saints prevailed over Wigan in the sun-drenched climes of Cardiff Bay. Mark played on 23 of the Saints` 28 league rounds in that campaign. Mark scored two well-taken tries against Leeds in these matches.

At the commencement of the 2005 campaign Mark needed to play in two more matches for his century of appearances for the Saints. This milestone was soon passed as `Edmo` seemed to mature into one of the most mobile front rowers in the league. Cup Finals notwithstanding Mark`s most memorable moment in a Saints jersey occurred on the 26th of June, 2005. That day Saints demolished Wigan by a record 75 points to nil. Mark distinguished himself by scoring a second half hat trick of tries including a scorcher when he backed up Paul Sculthorpe to power in from 40 metres. That display and other rave reviews persuaded Sydney Roosters to offer Mark a contract for the 2006 season. Mark moved with the best wishes of all Saints` supporters. Mark`s 117 matches for the Saints yielded 16 tries and a precious Challenge Cup Final winner`s medal!

Mark did not enjoy the best of luck whilst playing in Australia, both for Sydney Roosters and their feeder club Newtown Jets. He suffered a bad shoulder injury and returned home to play for Salford for the 2007 Super League campaign. The injury curse was to strike once more, however, when Edmo suffered further damage to his shoulder and ankle. He signed a one-year deal with Castleford Tigers on 30th October 2007, but failed the medical and was forced to call it a day. Saints fans will remember him for his total commitment to the cause, seemingly with disregard for his personal well-being, hence the high injury toll. He had terrific speed for a front-rower and his long distance try in the Challenge Cup tie at Odsal will long be remembered as the kick start to the campaign which ended with the demolition of Wigan at Cardiff several months later. He is now a personal trainer and has his own motivational company in Australia where he now lives. He remains highly regarded by players and fans alike.

In his Testimonial Brochure, former team mate Mike Bennett describes him as follows: "A real character! Edmo was a very brave player. Sometimes so brave you thought he must be daft! He is definitely one of the most eccentric lads who is up there with Nick Fozzard in that respect. If you went in his car he had these notes, Post Its and when he brought his sun visor down it would say something like today you are going to be the best. He would have another somewhere else and he would have these self help books on the back seat. If you asked someone what they had done the previous evening, they would probably say watched TV or something like that. Not Edmo. It would be something completely different and off the wall. Never in a bad mood and one of rugby's characters, which every team needs to brighten their day up."
