Biography of Michael Shenton

The Pontefract-born centre joined Saints from Castleford in 2010 after being a much sought after commodity. He joined on a three year contract and had the tough task of replacing Matt Gidley. Shenton first played Super League in 2004 and established himself as a regular in the Castleford line up in 2005. Since then, the 24-year-old was one of the most consistent performers for Cas and that form led him to be called up eight times for England. Ideally suited to the centre position, Shenny could also play on the wing.

The 2011 season was a real roller coaster for all the team. Not only had the club got to contend with playing all their home matches at Widnes, following the sale of Knowsley Road, but a series of injuries threatened to derail the quest for silverware.

Nevertheless the players responded magnificently by reaching an eleventh consecutive Challenge Cup Semi Final and a record breaking sixth successive Grand Final. However, a sour taste of disappointment featured as the Saints lost to Wigan in the Challenge Cup and Leeds came back strongly in the last twenty minutes of the Grand Final to dampen the spirits. The season was marked by the emergence of young players who cemented their positions in the first team and demanded their inclusion in the big games.

Donning the Saints shirt in 2011, Michael established himself as a consistent member of the Saints backline. He scored 13 tries in the SL season and added sound defence out wide as the young Saints side developed their combinations. In October he made his way to his first major Final with the Saints as they tackled Leeds in the 2011 Grand Final. After scoring a brilliant try in that game Michael suffered a dislocation to his elbow which kept him out of contention for the Four Nations tournament that year.

Michael suffered further misfortune when missing several key matches in his last season with the Saints. Crucially he was not available for the Super League playoffs when Saints were downed at the penultimate hurdle by Warrington Wolves. Shenton moved back to Castleford Tigers at the end of the season, where he eventually regained his international status and captained the team.
